Deer Calling Guide – The Basics

Knowing when to use the correct call at the correct time of year can be confusing. As Mark Timney with the Bowsite states “A key to effective deer calling is matching your calling strategy and tactics to specific whitetail behavior at the time of year you’re afield.”  Check out this great chart at one of my favorite websites, the Bowsite, showing what type of call to use at the proper time of year. ATV Silencers – Do they work?

ATV Silencer - I have not yet installed an ATV silencer, but from the reviews I’ve read…..it works. I don’t think it will have much affect on not scarring off game when using my ATV in the timber, but if it creates a more quiet riding experience, it will be worth it for me. I bought the Benz ATV Silencer and intend to install it on my Honda Fourtrax 300. If anyone has any feedback, please add a comment below.

According to PETA, Deer Hunting Can Kill You

PETA and a dozens of other mainstream media outlets picked up this story and twisted it for their own spin. The study referenced in the story involved a grand total of 25 middle age men; 17 of whom already had heart disease. The conclusion: hiking to a tree stand, sighting a buck, and dragging a kill out of the field raised the heart rates of these 25 men to dangerous levels.
Here is the counter spin:
Delete Deer Hunting and insert any activity that causes exertion and excitement for a middle age man with heart disease and the same heart rate will result; watching a favorite baseball team win the world series, shoveling snow after the superbowl, hiking the Appalachian Trail, paddling a canoe on the Current River, having sex with a super model, or mowing the yard while listening to Notre Dame lose again. All will have the same effect. But, never have I seen a news story warning about participating in these activities.  For more positive hunting stories, check here.
Plus, the study was done and first reported on ten plus years ago. Why is it being dusted off again just weeks before the first deer seasons?
